Cuyuna Lakes State Trail Brainerd Segment | Improvement 19-02
Connection and designation of the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail in Brainerd from 28th Street SE to a connection to the Buffalo Hills Trail at Norwood Street.
Background
The City of Brainerd has been appropriated $1,100,000 for the connection of the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail in Brainerd through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This money was appropriated in 2014 for construction of the trail in Deerwood. The left over funds were re-appropriated to the City for the trail connection in Brainerd. It is anticipated after this connection is constructed, the City of Brainerd will enter into a Joint Powers Agreement with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for designation of this segment and other existing trails in Brainerd as the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail. The City has contracted with Short Elliot Hendrickson, Inc. for design and construction engineering services on this proposed trail segment.
S 6th Street (Hwy 371B) & Willow Street Roundabout Project
This project is aimed to reconfigure the intersection of S. 6th Street (MN Highway 371B) and Willow Street from a two-way stop-controlled intersection into a roundabout intersection.
Background
This intersection has previously and continues to be a safety concern due to the large amount of crashes (including severe crashes) that have occurred over the previous several years. This intersection also acts as a barrier for pedestrian crossing due to the amount of traffic that is encountered at the intersection. The City of Brainerd was awarded a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grant to construct a roundabout at this intersection to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety and improve the overall efficiency for traffic flow.
