1. Where can I obtain an application for a permit to purchase a handgun?

A Permit to Purchase may be obtained at most law enforcement agencies during regular business hours. An online application is also available. The completed application must be hand delivered to the appropriate police department/sheriff's office by the applicant for processing.

The applicant should bring their completed application to the appropriate police department/sheriff's office in person during regular business hours. The applicant will be required to provide a current driver's license with their correct address at that time.

3. Is there a fee for the permit to purchase?

There is no cost associated with this permit.

4. How long is a permit to purchase valid?

A permit to purchase is valid for 1 year.

5. What is the process for renewing my permit to purchase?

The renewal process is the same process as for the initial application.

6. How old do I need to be to apply for a permit to purchase?

An applicant must be at least 21 years of age.

7. How long does the permit to purchase application process take?

By state law, the law enforcement agency processing the application has 7 days from the receipt of the application to either approve or deny the application.

8. How will I know if I have been approved for the permit to purchase?

If approved, your permit will be sent to you in the mail. If denied, you will receive a letter in the mail stating the reason for the denial.

9. Is it necessary to have a permit to purchase to buy a long gun?

No. A permit to purchase is required for the purchase of a handgun.

1. How can I schedule a tour of the Brainerd Police Department?

2. I lost my cell phone and my cell phone carrier says I need a police report in order to get reimbursed for my phone.

The Brainerd Police Department is unable to write a "police report" for lost property as it is not a crime. We are, however, able provide you with an "incident report" documenting that you contacted us to report that you lost your phone.

3. I locked my keys in my car. Will the police respond to open my vehicle?

The Brainerd Police Department will only respond to vehicle lock-outs in emergency situations, such as a small child being locked in the vehicle. For non-emergency situations, please contact a locksmith or a towing company.

4. Does the Brainerd Police Department provide fingerprinting services?

5. Does the City of Brainerd have a curfew?

6. Will the Brainerd Police Department register the serial number of my bicycle?

The Brainerd Police Department does not maintain a registry of bicycle serial numbers. It is the owner's responsibility to maintain serial number information.

7. Where do I pay a parking ticket?

Payments for parking tickets issued by the Brainerd Police Department must be remitted within 10 calendar days of the date the ticket was issued or the fine will double. Payment can be made online, in person, by phone, or by mail.

1. Online: Using credit or debit card, go to the City of Brainerd website and click on Payments.
2. By Phone: With a credit or debit card, call 218-829-2805.
3. In Person: At the Brainerd Police Department (225 East River Rd, Brainerd) using cash, credit/debit card, or check/money order.  
4. By Mail: Send your check or money order made payable to the Brainerd Police Department (including a copy of the ticket or noting the ticket number on the check or money order) to:

8. Can I appeal a parking ticket? If so, what is the process for doing so?

You may dispute a parking ticket that was issued by the Brainerd Police Department. For full information, see the Appealing Parking Tickets page.

9. What can I do if someone is parked in my rented parking space?

If someone is parked in your rented parking space you may contact a towing company and have the vehicle towed away at your expense. Please notify the Brainerd Police Department if you have a vehicle towed. This will enable our office to direct the owner of the vehicle to the appropriate towing company should the owner contact our office with regard to their missing vehicle.

10. Where do I pay a ticket, citation, or fine?

11. How do I contact a jail inmate?

There is one jail in Crow Wing County and it is an entity of the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office. The jail, which is totally separate from the Brainerd Police Department, is located at 313 Laurel Street, Brainerd.
